24- Extract

Thomas Stimson
Period 5
In this film the author portrays a subtle theme by using big hints. He delivers this theme through using camera angles, edits, sound effects, and Mis-en-scene. I think the author's theme is things will get harder before they get easier.
The producer uses a variety of sound effects in order to demonstrate the theme mentioned. One sound effect being diegetic sound. Diegetic sound was used when the male officer pushes the female criminal against the wall. The purpose of that was to demonstrate the anger that the officer had towards the criminal. Voice overs were also used in the clip. An example of that would be when the cops are going to the interrogation room. This demonstrates that the officer let his emotions get the better of him adding to the tension. Non-diegetic was also used to demonstrate the theme. It is used after the officer attacks the girl and music plays. This tense music shows that that was a pivotal point in the film. These all add up to the theme that the producer is trying to demonstrate.
Lighting also plays a big role in the development of the theme. The use of dim lighting throughout the film adds tension to the film which adds to the tense theme. The badges shown in the film show that the police are involved which adds an aspect of authority to the film. Rope is used in the film to tie the criminal to the chair. This demonstrates that she is a high-profile criminal which adds another type of depth into the film.
A variety of editing is also used in the film. Shot reverse shot is used when the two main characters are talking. The quick switches between characters adds anticipation to the film. A split screen is used to show the cops coming into the room. Which adds a sense of suspense because what will happen to the officer is mysterious. These both add to the theme.
Camera angles are also used in a way that adds complexity to the theme. In the beginning of the film a couple of zooms were used when the officer took notice of the criminal and the cameras. This show his sense oalertness. Multiple close-ups were also sed in the film. These closeups on the characters contribute to the theme being more tense. The two-person shot used when the cop is yelling at the criminal adds a sense of connection. That the two characters have met each other before.
So, in these ways, the producer of this short film managed to convey the theme; things will get harder before they get easier. The use of camera angles, sounds, Mis-en-scene, and editing to add to the theme. These four criteria add different dimension to the theme. They add suspense, tension, and perseverance perspectives to the theme.
